Thrift-Store Tiered Snack Stand

Three plates and two candlesticks become a tiered stand, so the snacks stay off the mat. About 15 minutes, plus time for the glue to cure.

A three-tier snack stand made from patterned plates and wooden candlesticks, filled with truffles, caramel corn and fall cookies

It’s mahjong night, ladies, so let’s make a tiered snack stand and keep the snacks off the mat. All you need is three plates, two candlesticks and strong glue.

You’ll need

Makes one stand. About 15 minutes, plus time for the glue to cure.

  • 3 plates in small, medium and large (thrift stores are perfect)
  • 2 glass or wood candlesticks
  • Strong clear craft glue for glass and ceramic, like E6000

Make it

  1. Illustration: gluing a candlestick to the center of a large plate

Find the center of the large plate and glue on the first candlestick.

  2. Illustration: setting the medium plate on top of the first candlestick

Put glue on top of the candlestick and glue the medium plate on.

  3. Illustration: adding the second candlestick and small plate to the stand

Glue the second candlestick to the medium plate, put glue on top of it, then glue on the small plate.

  4. Illustration: filling the finished tiered stand with treats

Let it set, following the time on the glue (E6000 takes 24 to 72 hours to cure fully). Then fill it with your favorite treats.

Lady M’s tips

  • Hand-wash only.
  • Old plates can have glazes that aren’t meant for food, so put a paper doily or parchment on each tier, or use newer plates.
  • Line the candlesticks up dead center, and set the heavier snacks on the bottom.

On my table

It goes on a side table beside the mat, so every player can reach it without touching the tiles.

That’s it, and you’re ready for game night. Bird Bam Cheers! ...and happy mahj-ing!
