Okay, ladies, these little tarts are cut to the shape of a mahjong tile. Puff pastry, fanned pears, brown sugar and cinnamon, baked until puffed and golden and finished with a drizzle of honey.

You’ll need

Makes 8. About 25 minutes.

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 2 ripe but firm pears, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Honey or caramel sauce, to drizzle

Make it

  1. Illustration: a sheet of puff pastry on parchment cut into tall rectangles the shape of mahjong tiles, a knife scoring them

Heat the oven to 400°F. Cut the pastry into 8 rectangles, the shape of a mahjong tile, and score a thin border around each one.

  2. Illustration: hands fanning thin pear slices inside the border of puff pastry rectangles

Fan pear slices inside the border.

  3. Illustration: a pastry brush brushing beaten egg on the edges of a puff pastry rectangle topped with fanned pear slices dusted with cinnamon sugar

Sprinkle with the brown sugar and cinnamon and brush the edges with egg.

  4. Illustration: honey drizzling from a honey dipper over golden baked puff pastry pear tarts

Bake 15 to 18 minutes, until puffed and golden, then drizzle with honey.

Lady M’s tips

  • Keep the pastry cold so it puffs.
  • A sharp knife gives cleaner edges than a pizza cutter.
  • A scoop of vanilla ice cream turns them into dessert.

On my table

Line them up on a long board like a wall of tiles.

That’s it, and you’re ready for game night. Bird Bam Cheers! ...and happy mahj-ing!
