Fall Simmer Pot

Orange, apple, cinnamon and cloves on the stove. Five minutes to set up, and the whole house smells like fall before the first guest rings the bell.

A cream enameled pot of orange and apple slices, cranberries, cinnamon sticks, cloves and rosemary in water, on a wooden trivet with a rack of mahjong tiles behind

It’s mahjong night, ladies, so let’s make a fall simmer pot. Your whole house will smell amazing before the first guest rings the bell, and it takes about five minutes to set up.

You’ll need

Fills one medium pot. About 5 minutes to set up, then it simmers for up to about 4 hours.

  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1 apple, sliced
  • ½ cup fresh cranberries
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tsp whole cloves
  • 1 sprig of rosemary
  • Water

Make it

  1. Illustration: hands slicing an orange on a wooden board with apple slices, cranberries and cinnamon sticks nearby

Slice the orange and apple, then put everything in a medium pot.

  2. Illustration: water pouring from a pitcher into a pot of orange and apple slices, cranberries and cinnamon sticks

Fill the pot about three-quarters full with water.

  3. Illustration: a cream enameled pot of fruit and spices gently simmering on the stove

Bring it just to a simmer, then turn the heat down low.

  4. Illustration: adding a little more water to the simmer pot from a pitcher

Add more water as it cooks down.

Lady M’s tips

  • Never leave it unattended or let it boil dry. Turn it off before you sit down to play if you can’t see the stove.
  • Keep an eye on the water. It cooks down faster than you think.
  • Bag the dry ingredients with a tag for an easy little gift.

On my table

A pretty enamel pot looks good left out on the stove.

That’s it, and you’re ready for game night. Bird Bam Cheers! ...and happy mahj-ing!
